“Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” ~ The Thanksgiving Psalm
The antidote to pride (hubris)?
Gratitude.
For example, in the scripture quoted above, the Psalmist reminds us that God made us. Not only did we not make ourselves, but we could not.
Being grateful requires us to acknowledge that relationships, possessions, situations, and even challenges, are gifts. That act of acknowledgement is the antidote to pride.
For example: Yes, it required hard work on my part to get through six years of college. But, I acknowledge that my mind and body are gifts. I could not have attended college without them.
So, during this Thanksgiving Week, these are only some of the things for which I am thankful:
First and foremost, Michelle
Our children
My Faith
My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, et al
The opportunities that I’ve had to attend school and pursue the career of my choice
The challenges that Michelle and I have faced together – some overcome, some not
The economic and personal liberties that we enjoy in a nation of freedom
My body (old as it’s getting) and mind (forgetful as it’s getting)
My camera, which has made me keenly aware that my eyes are amazing instruments
Holidays and special occasions spent with family, eating and making memories
Hand-and-Foot nights with good friends
I’ll stop for now. Happy Thanksgiving!
